Key findings of the UK government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2022

The O Team • 11 July 2023

1. Cyberattacks remain prevalent:

The survey revealed that 46% of UK businesses reported experiencing a cyberattack or security breach in the previous 12 months. This indicates the persistent threat of cybercrime and the need for robust security measures.

2. Ransomware attacks on the rise:

Ransomware attacks, where hackers encrypt data and demand a ransom, have increased in frequency. Around 22% of businesses surveyed reported being targeted by ransomware, highlighting the evolving tactics employed by cybercriminals.

3. Phishing attacks pose significant risks:

Phishing attacks, typically involving deceptive emails or messages to trick individuals into revealing sensitive information, continue to be a major concern. 75% of businesses identified phishing as a significant security risk.

4. Cybersecurity incidents affect large and small organisations:

While larger organisations face a higher volume of attacks, small businesses are not immune. Nearly 42% of micro and small businesses experienced a cyber incident in the past year, emphasising the importance of cybersecurity for all types of organisations.

5. Human error remains a weak link:

Human factors continue to contribute to cyber incidents, with employee negligence or lack of awareness playing a significant role. 37% of businesses reported incidents caused by human error, reinforcing the need for cybersecurity training and awareness programs.

6. Investment in cybersecurity measures:

The survey indicated an increased investment in cybersecurity by UK businesses, with 81% spending money on cybersecurity measures. This demonstrates a growing recognition of the importance of protecting against cyber threats.

7. Impact on businesses:

Cyber incidents can have significant repercussions for businesses. In 2022, the average cost of a cyber breach for organisations was over £4,200. Additionally, breaches can lead to reputational damage, loss of customer trust, and disruption to operations.

Overall, the Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2022 highlighted the ongoing threats posed by cyberattacks, the need for continued investment in cybersecurity measures, and the importance of employee education and awareness to mitigate risks.
